La Liga, the premier football league in Spain, has launched an investigation into an incident involving Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham and Getafe forward Mason Greenwood. During Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Getafe on Thursday, Bellingham appeared to direct comments towards Greenwood, prompting Getafe to file a complaint with the La Liga match director.
In response to the complaint, La Liga has taken a standard approach by employing a lip-reader to analyze the alleged exchange between the two English players. The league aims to act based on the findings of the expert lip-reading report.
Greenwood, 22, is currently on loan at Getafe from Manchester United until the end of the season. The striker has faced controversy in the past, with Manchester United suspending him in January 2022 following allegations of misconduct towards a woman. However, after internal investigations led to dropped charges, including rape and assault, in February 2023, Manchester United allowed Greenwood to continue his career elsewhere.
Despite off-field issues, Greenwood has been actively contributing on the pitch for Getafe, scoring four goals in 18 league appearances this season. The young forward, capped once by England, remains focused on his professional commitments despite past controversies.
On the other hand, Jude Bellingham, a 20-year-old midfielder, has made a significant impact since his arrival in La Liga from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. He currently shares the distinction of being the league’s joint top scorer with an impressive tally of 14 goals.
The investigation by La Liga underscores the commitment of football authorities to uphold the integrity and sportsmanship of the game. As the league awaits the lip-reading report, both Bellingham and Greenwood will be under scrutiny, and any disciplinary actions taken will be crucial in maintaining the league’s reputation for fair play.
