June 10, 2023 – The National Population Commission (NPC) in Anambra State has assured the public of its preparedness to deliver a credible, reliable, and acceptable 2023 Population and Housing Census, despite its postponement by the federal government. In a one-day breakfast meeting with media executives, Chidi Ezeoke, the Federal Commissioner representing the State in the Commission, expressed optimism about the announcement of a new date for the exercise by the new administration, emphasizing the importance of utilizing digital technology for proper planning and development.
According to Dr. Joachin Ulasi, the Anambra NPC Director, preparations for the headcount began in 2014, and all 21 Local Government Areas in the State have been adequately demarcated for the success of the exercise. The Commissioner for Information, Paul Nwosu, welcomed the postponement, stating that it would provide the NPC with an opportunity to perfect the project and ensure a holistic and acceptable census.
The decision to postpone the census was made after extensive consultations between the Commission and the government, including an enlightenment campaign to educate the public. The NPC recognizes that conducting a census is not something to be rushed, and the delay will enable a comprehensive and well-executed exercise similar to those conducted by other countries.
