National Population Commission Reviews Processes for 2023 Census Implementation

The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced its ongoing review of the processes and activities initially set in motion for the implementation of the 2023 population and housing census exercise. The census was postponed by the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, and the NPC is determined to ensure that the preparations undertaken so far remain relevant and effective.

Chief Benedict Ukpong, the National Population Commissioner, made this revelation during a media briefing, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the resources already invested in the census project and avoiding the need to start from scratch once the census is conducted.

The commission has successfully completed the demarcation of all localities, including coastal communities, oil platforms, and other hard-to-reach areas, across the country. The Enumeration Area Maps (EAM) resulting from this exercise are now prepared for the execution of the census.

Chief Benedict Ukpong called upon the new government to build upon the progress made by the previous administration and actively participate in the 2023 census for the collective interests, progress, and development of the country. He expressed regret that the statutory security and logistic committee for the exercise has yet to be inaugurated.

Dr. Udeme Nnanna, founder and lecturer at a local institution, advised individuals not to travel to their hometowns for the census, as they will be captured wherever they currently reside. He urged the NPC to extend its advocacy efforts to rural communities, emphasizing the need for the government to collaborate with the commission to improve the welfare of the people.

Amos Etuk, the chairman of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), pledged the media’s support to the NPC and urged the government to utilize the census as an opportunity to gain public confidence.

The NPC’s ongoing review of the census implementation processes demonstrates their commitment to ensuring the accuracy and effectiveness of the forthcoming census exercise.
