Ex-Governor's Children Fight Step-Mother Over Property

A serious legal battle is taking place in court as the children of a former military governor, Idongesit Nkanga, are contesting their stepmother’s possession of their late father’s property. The disagreement, happening at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Jabi, Abuja, has gained a lot of attention. The ex-governor’s children have turned to the court, asking for help to get back their family house and challenge their stepmother’s right to it.

The four children, along with their mother, Joanna, have asked Judge O.A. Musa to cancel the order that allowed their stepmother, Mosun Nkanga, to take possession of their family home. They say that they are currently without a place to live. Their lawyer explained that during the eviction process, one of the children was even seen being chased out in a video. The children had been living in the property before their father married Mosun in 2007, after divorcing Joanna.

However, Mosun’s lawyer, Marvin Omorogbe, disagreed with the children’s claims. He said there was no urgency to address their request and mentioned that the children were on vacation in France when the eviction happened. He also expressed concerns about media reports on the case and asked the court to prevent lawyers from making comments that could unfairly influence the outcome.

Judge Musa agreed to review the court’s previous actions and stressed the importance of accurate reporting by the media. Due to a busy court schedule, the judge advised the children to find another place to stay until the case resumes after the vacation period. The court session ended, and the case was adjourned until September 1st for further hearings.

The legal dispute started when Mosun first took legal action against Joanna and her children in 2021. Mosun claimed they were refusing to let her access the property in Asokoro. In March 2022, the court ruled in Mosun’s favor, saying that denying her access to her matrimonial home violated her rights. The court also ordered Joanna and her children not to interfere with Mosun’s right to live in the property. According to the late governor’s will, one part of the property was given to Mosun, while the other part was meant for the children to live in until the youngest son turned 30.

As the legal battle continues, the courtroom becomes the battleground for the ex-governor’s children as they dispute their stepmother’s possession of their late father’s property. The court’s decision will have significant consequences for all parties involved. With the case set to resume after the judges’ vacation, the future of the family property remains uncertain. This dispute serves as a reminder of the complex legal issues that can arise when different family members have conflicting claims to an estate, highlighting the important role of the court in resolving such matters.
