National Population Commission (NPC) Creates Specific Category for Diplomatic Community in 2023 Census Questionnaire

NPC Specific Category for Diplomatic community for 2023 census

The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the creation of a specific category for the diplomatic community in the upcoming 2023 census questionnaire. This move is aimed at ensuring that diplomats are correctly identified and enumerated during the exercise. The Chairman of NPC, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, made this announcement while briefing the diplomatic community in Abuja on the 2023 National Population and Housing Census.

Hon. Isa Kwarra assured foreign diplomats that the Commission will ensure that the information provided by diplomats is kept confidential and not shared with other government agencies or third parties. He also revealed that the questionnaire provides multilingual support to ensure that diplomats can understand and respond to the questionnaire in their own language.

Furthermore, the Chairman disclosed that census enumerators will be trained on how to identify and enumerate diplomats to ensure consistency and accuracy in the data collected. He added that there will be restrictions on movement during the census to control individual mobility, which will enhance full coverage of the population and help to check double enumeration.

However, diplomats and all those on essential duties will be exempted from the restriction of movement. Hon. Isa Kwarra reiterated that the Commission is committed to ensuring that the results of the census are acceptable to Nigerians and that the quality of the data generated meets international best standards for planning and developmental purposes.

In line with the United Nations principles and recommendations for the 2020 rounds of Population and Housing Censuses, the 2023 census will be fully digital, and the Commission has deployed technology to conduct the exercise and enhance data quality.

The NPC’s decision to create a specific category for the diplomatic community in the census questionnaire is a step in the right direction towards ensuring accurate and reliable data for planning and development purposes. The use of technology and multilingual support is also a commendable move towards ensuring a seamless and efficient census exercise.
