NDLEA and ALGON Partner to Fight Drug Abuse

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) have agreed to work together to curb substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in communities across the country.

This agreement was reached during a meeting when the national president of ALGON, Hon. Aminu Muazu Maifata, led other leaders on a courtesy visit to the chairman and chief executive officer of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retired), at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Marwa expressed the NDLEA’s readiness to work with local government leaders to ensure people at the grassroots are well informed about the dangers of drug abuse and to provide help for those already affected.

“We’re particularly happy that you’re here to identify with our work and partner with us because you are the closest tier of government to the people, especially the grassroots and our communities where the majority of Nigerians reside,” Marwa said. “The drug scourge is in virtually all our communities, no community across the country is spared, and as such, we need your partnership to cascade all our efforts in terms of drug demand reduction and even the supply reduction, down to the remote communities.”

Marwa also highlighted the importance of this partnership, especially as NDLEA is deploying its personnel to local government areas to establish a presence in rural communities. This will support efforts to curb drug abuse and illicit drug dealing, which fuel crime in these areas.

He encouraged ALGON leaders to mobilize their members nationwide to set up local government drug control committees and War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) committees. These committees will include traditional rulers, community leaders, opinion leaders, religious leaders, and market and women groups to coordinate the fight against drugs at the community level.
