Niger Coup Leader Agrees to ECOWAS Talks After Meeting with Islamic Scholars

In a surprising turn of events, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the leader behind the recent coup in Niger Republic, has shown a willingness to engage in dialogue with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This decision follows a significant meeting between General Tchiani and a delegation of influential Nigerian Islamic scholars led by Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, the national leader of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS).

According to Niger Republic’s Prime Minister, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, General Tchiani has given the green light for talks with ECOWAS, raising hopes for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing political turmoil. Prime Minister Zeine expressed optimism that these discussions will take place in the coming days.

“We have agreed, and the leader of our country has given the green light for dialogue. They will now go back and inform the Nigerian President about what they have heard from us… we hope in the coming days, they (ECOWAS) will come here to meet us to discuss how the sanctions imposed against us will be lifted,” Prime Minister Zeine announced.

As diplomatic efforts gain momentum and tensions ease, all eyes are on the region to witness the unfolding of these discussions and their potential impact on lifting sanctions and restoring stability.
