Nigerian Customs Orders Drug Tests for Every Nigeria Customs Officer and New Recruit

The Nigeria Customs Service has introduced a new directive requiring mandatory drug tests for all serving officers and incoming recruits. This policy is part of a broader effort to strengthen discipline, enhance operational efficiency, and maintain the integrity of one of Nigeria’s key security agencies.

Announcing the initiative, the Comptroller-General emphasized that the Service cannot afford to compromise on the mental and physical fitness of its personnel. Every officer and recruit will now undergo compulsory screening to ensure they are free from substances that could impair judgment or affect performance in critical security and enforcement roles.

The policy applies to all levels of the Nigeria Customs Service, including officers in Commands, Zones, and Headquarters. The goal is to prevent substance abuse from undermining decision-making, border protection, revenue collection, and anti-smuggling operations. The leadership made it clear that officers found under the influence of drugs will face strict consequences.

This move reflects a renewed commitment to professionalism and public trust. By enforcing a drug-free policy, the Nigeria Customs Service aims to maintain high standards of accountability, safety, and operational readiness. Officers responsible for enforcement and border security will now be held to the highest levels of discipline and integrity, ensuring that the Service operates effectively and efficiently.

The introduction of mandatory drug tests also signals a zero-tolerance approach toward any behavior that could compromise national security or the reputation of the Service. With this reform, Nigeria Customs is taking a firm step toward a fully professional, disciplined, and trustworthy workforce, reinforcing its role as a critical institution in the country’s security architecture.
