Nigerian Troops Head to Gambia for Crucial Peacekeeping Mission

Amidst ongoing security challenges within Nigeria, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have mobilized 197 personnel for a vital peacekeeping mission in The Gambia. This deployment was announced by Maj-Gen. Boniface Sinjen, Chief of Operations, Nigerian Army, during the graduation ceremony of Nigerian Company 9, part of the Economic Community of West African States Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), held in Jaji, Kaduna State.

The troops underwent rigorous Pre-Deployment Training (PDT) at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAILPKC) in Jaji, Kaduna State, starting on May 4. This training equipped them with essential tactical skills and knowledge necessary for peace support operations.

Maj-Gen. Sinjen emphasized the critical timing of the mission, as The Gambia faces political uncertainty and instability that have significantly affected civilians. He underscored the troops’ pivotal role in maintaining peace, protecting lives, and fostering sustainable development in the region.

He urged the troops to uphold professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, adhering strictly to the ECOWAS mandate guiding their mission. Maj-Gen. Ademola Adedoja, Commandant of MLAILPKC, commended the troops’ readiness, affirming their preparedness to succeed in the challenging Peace Support Operation environment.
