In a significant revelation, Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has emphasized the pressing need for a substantial investment of N21 trillion to address the nation’s staggering housing deficit. Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony of a 500-unit housing estate initiated by the Sokoto State government, Senator Shettima highlighted the gravity of the situation.

According to data provided by Senator Shettima, Nigeria currently grapples with a housing deficit of a staggering twenty-eight million houses. This colossal shortage underscores the urgency of addressing the housing crisis that millions of Nigerians face.

Vice President Shettima also took the opportunity to commend Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State for his proactive efforts in tackling the housing needs of the people. The project, located in the Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State, is projected to cost the state government approximately N7.3 billion.

Governor Aliyu, shedding light on the housing estate’s purpose, stated that it will primarily cater to civil servants and will eventually be sold to them on an owner-occupier basis once completed. This strategic approach not only addresses the housing deficit but also empowers civil servants with the opportunity to own their homes.
