Ningi Gives Akpabio 1-Week Ultimatum to Reverse Suspension or Face Lawsuit

Ningi has given Akpabio a one-week ultimatum to reverse his suspension or face legal action. The suspended Senator, Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central Senatorial District, deemed his suspension faulty and has threatened to take the Senate leadership to court if the suspension is not withdrawn.

Ningi, through his lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), stated that his suspension violated his right to freedom of speech as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights. Falana argued that the Senate President acted improperly by serving as the accuser, prosecutor, and judge in the case against Ningi, which contravened constitutional provisions for a fair hearing.

Falana further contended that the suspension not only infringed on Ningi’s rights but also deprived the people of Bauchi Central Senatorial District of representation in the Senate for three months, which is a breach of constitutional provisions.

Citing previous legal precedents, Falana highlighted that courts have ruled against the suspension of legislators in similar cases, declaring such actions illegal and unconstitutional. He urged Akpabio to lift Ningi’s suspension immediately, warning of legal consequences if the request is not met within seven days.

Additionally, Falana threatened to report Akpabio to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee for disregarding court judgments. He emphasized that if Akpabio fails to act within the stipulated timeframe, they will seek redress in the Federal High Court to reinstate Ningi and pursue further legal action against Akpabio.
