The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and affiliated unions have initiated nationwide protests in major cities, including Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Jos, and Ogun, addressing concerns over the rising cost of living, inflation, insecurity, and overall economic hardships. The demonstration follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, urging prompt action on economic challenges faced by the populace.
The focal point of the protest revolves around the perceived non-fulfillment of agreements made on October 2, 2023, particularly regarding measures promised after the controversial removal of the fuel subsidy. NLC members argue that these agreed-upon measures to alleviate hardships have not been effectively implemented, leading to discontent.
Despite a recent last-minute meeting between the federal government and NLC officials, discussions ended in a deadlock, prompting the union to proceed with the planned protest. In Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero led the protest from the Labour House Headquarters, emphasizing the need for the government to address the grievances expressed by the Nigerian people.
Participating unions, including the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, the FCT Council, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, and the Nigeria Union of Teachers and Construction Workers’ Union, among others, joined the demonstration. Notable figures, such as former Nigeria Country Director of ActionAid, Ene Obi, and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, were also present.

Protesters wielded placards with inscriptions demanding an end to poverty, hunger, and devaluation, urging support for local industries. In Lagos, protesters marched through Ikeja, while in Jos, Plateau State, hundreds of workers gathered at the Secretariat Flyover bridge, lamenting economic hardships and insecurity.
Addressing journalists before the protest, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the peaceful nature of the rally, aimed at making the government aware of the challenges faced by Nigerians. Similar sentiments were echoed in Ogun State, where NLC members joined the protest in Abeokuta.
While the protests gained traction in various locations, Kano State witnessed a low turnout, raising questions about the absence of the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa. The protesters collectively called on the Federal Government to swiftly address the economic situation and security challenges before they escalate further.
