Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project Expands as NNPC Signs MoUs with Five African Countries
In a significant development for the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline (NMGP) project, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has signed four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with five African countries. The deal was finalized with Morocco, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Benin, and Guinea, further cementing the commitment to the ambitious pipeline project. The signings took place at the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, with representatives from ECOWAS and all participating countries present.
The NMGP project aims to construct a 5,600-kilometer gas pipeline, traversing a total of 13 African countries. The pipeline will pass through Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Senegal, and Mauritania. The signing of the MoUs represents an important milestone in the realization of this extensive infrastructure project.
The NNPC spokesperson, Garba Deen Muhammad, highlighted the significance of the agreements, stating that they reaffirm the commitment of the participating parties to the project. The MoUs were respectively signed between the NNPC and the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) of Morocco, the National Company of Petroleum Operations of Cote d’Ivoire (PETROCI), the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL), the National Hydrocarbons Company of Benin (SNH-Benin), and the National Petroleum Company of the Republic of Guinea (SONAP).

Once completed, the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project will serve multiple purposes. It will enhance the monetization of natural gas resources in the involved African countries and offer an alternative export route to Europe. Moreover, the project is expected to contribute to the acceleration of energy access, improvement of living conditions, economic integration, and mitigation of desertification in the sub-region.
Mele Kyari, the Group CEO of NNPC, expressed gratitude to the administration of President Bola Tinubu for entrusting the national energy company with this strategic project. Kyari emphasized that NNPC views the pipeline as an opportunity to capitalize on Nigeria’s abundant hydrocarbon resources, expand energy access, and drive economic growth, industrialization, and job creation across the African continent and beyond.
Amina Benkhadra, the Director-General of ONHYM, hailed the signing of the MoUs as a progressive step towards social and economic development, energy security, and accessibility. She emphasized the importance of achieving Africa’s total development by Africans through such projects.
