Project Overview
The five mini-LNG plants include:
- NNPC Prime LNG
- NGML/Gasnexus LNG
- BUA LNG
- Highland LNG
- LNG Arete
NNPC holds significant stakes in three of these plants: 90% in Prime LNG, 50% in NGML/Gasnexus LNG, and 10% in BUA LNG. Collectively, these facilities will have a combined capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d).
Strategic Importance
Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, Mele Kyari, emphasized the project’s role in supporting the federal government’s gas-to-power initiatives. He highlighted that natural gas is pivotal for Nigeria’s future, acting as a catalyst for industrialization, job creation, and economic diversification. These mini-LNG plants will facilitate efficient gas transportation over long distances, providing a cleaner and more affordable energy source to households, industries, and businesses, especially in regions lacking gas pipeline infrastructure.
Government Support
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, reiterated the federal government’s commitment to harnessing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for national development. He assured NNPC and its partners of the government’s support, noting that these initiatives align with broader aspirations to reduce carbon emissions and improve the well-being of Nigerians.
Local Impact
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, expressed gratitude for selecting the state as the project’s location. He described it as a significant step toward achieving energy security in Nigeria and pledged the state government’s support through manpower provision, security, and collaboration with host communities throughout the project’s duration.
Conclusion
The launch of these mini-LNG plants marks a transformative phase in Nigeria’s energy sector. By leveraging natural gas, the nation aims to ensure energy security, drive industrial growth, and promote sustainable economic development.
