National Population Commission Completes Preparations for 2023 Census, Awaits President Tinubu’s Directive
In a recent announcement, the National Population Commission (NPC) has revealed that it is fully prepared to carry out the 2023 population and housing census. Clifford Zirra, the NPC Federal Commissioner in Adamawa, stated that the commission has meticulously set the stage for the census and is now awaiting instructions from President Bola Tinubu to commence the crucial exercise.
During an interactive session with media executives in Yola, Zirra emphasized the significance of the census, stating that it plays a vital role in shaping the nation’s future. He highlighted the importance of gathering accurate and up-to-date population data for effective planning and development. This data, he mentioned, serves as the foundation for policy formulation, resource allocation, and the implementation of various social and economic programs.
Zirra expressed the NPC’s satisfaction with the level of accomplishment it has achieved thus far. He also welcomed the decision by the Federal Government to postpone the census to allow the new administration to contribute to the census process. This delay has not only granted the government a chance for input but has also enabled the NPC to refine its processes for conducting the first-ever digital census.
The NPC Commissioner revealed that the commission has completed essential preparations for the census, including Enumeration Area Demarcation, pre-tests, trial census, field staff training, and the establishment of ICT infrastructure across the country. The introduction of digital tools is expected to streamline data collection and enhance the accuracy of the census results.
Alhaji Abubakar Hamma-Adama, the Director of NPC in the state, expressed gratitude for the collaboration between the commission and media organizations in the state during the preparations. He acknowledged the importance of publicity and enlightenment for the success of the census and called for continued media support when the census date is finalized.
The upcoming census is poised to provide a comprehensive snapshot of Nigeria’s population and housing landscape, thereby contributing significantly to the nation’s developmental trajectory. The NPC’s meticulous preparations and the adoption of digital methods underscore the commitment to accurate data collection and effective planning.
