Olayinka Urges Atiku: 'Go And Rest, Let Young Nigerians Lead PDP'

In a candid and impassioned plea, Lere Olayinka, a prominent figure within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former aide to ex-Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose, has called on the 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to take a step back and allow a new generation of Nigerians to take charge of the party’s leadership.

Olayinka’s message comes in the wake of the 2023 presidential election, in which he ran as the PDP House of Representatives candidate for Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II. During interviews on television programs such as Television Continental (TVC) and Silverbird Television’s NewsHub, he shared his views on the recent Presidential Election Petition Tribunal judgment, which upheld the victory of President Bola Tinubu from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former PDP aide questioned the wisdom of pursuing legal challenges after the election results had been declared, given the sheer complexity of addressing alleged irregularities in over 176,000 polling units. Olayinka emphasized that the PDP should have focused its efforts on securing a victory through the electoral process itself, rather than turning to the courts after the fact.

Moreover, Olayinka drew attention to the internal discord within opposition parties, with a particular focus on the PDP, as a significant factor contributing to their electoral loss. He highlighted issues such as the suspension and expulsion of National Assembly candidates, the prioritization of a single National Chairman over governors, and other internal disputes as elements that undermined the PDP’s chances.

In his concluding remarks, Olayinka urged for a strategic shift within the PDP and emphasized the need for younger Nigerians to assume more prominent leadership roles within the party. He stressed that unity and collaboration among opposition parties would be crucial to presenting a formidable challenge to the ruling party in the upcoming 2027 elections.

As the PDP engages in post-election analysis and plans for the future, Olayinka’s candid message serves as a stark reminder of the need for self-reflection and reform within the party. It underscores the importance of revitalizing the PDP with fresh faces and ideas, ultimately positioning it as a formidable force in Nigerian politics once again.
