PDP Leaders Meet with Minister Wike to Settle Party Disputes in Rivers State

On the evening of September 17, 2024, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, met with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, in a high-level, closed-door meeting aimed at resolving ongoing party disputes. This meeting follows a letter from the BoT in August, seeking Wike’s cooperation to address the escalating tensions, particularly regarding the party’s leadership in Rivers State.

Wike’s longstanding disagreements with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, over control of the PDP’s structure in Rivers have continued to deepen. The minister recently vowed not to support the governor politically, heightening the party’s internal conflicts.

Despite accusations from fellow PDP governors labeling Wike a “mole” within the party, the former Rivers State Governor denied these claims during a recent television interview. Adding to the tension, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, under the acting National Chairman, Iliya Umar Damagum, recently handed over the party’s leadership in Rivers to Wike. This development breaks from the party’s usual tradition, sparking further debate within its ranks.

The meeting is still ongoing, and journalists were barred from attending. The outcome may play a significant role in shaping the future of the PDP in Rivers State.
