The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has made significant progress in its commitment to strengthening and developing the oil and gas sector by shortlisting over 5,000 Nigerian applicants for foreign scholarships in the upcoming 2023/2024 academic session. The Head of the Overseas Scholarship Scheme in the PTDF, Mrs. Bolanle Kehinde-Agboola, disclosed this during a selected interview exercise for the shortlisted candidates pursuing MSc and PhD postgraduate programs.
The PTDF initiated the application process on February 13, 2023, through publications in national newspapers, inviting qualified Nigerians to apply. The overwhelming response resulted in the shortlisting of more than 5,000 applicants who will participate in the selection interviews taking place across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria.
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be Nigerian citizens and students specializing in oil and gas fields such as engineering, geology, computer sciences, environmental sciences, and management. Additionally, candidates must have achieved a minimum of a second-class upper division in any of these fields.
The scholarship program aims to equip successful applicants with the necessary skills and knowledge required to make innovative contributions to the oil and gas sector. Candidates will be sent abroad to study relevant skills through collaborations with renowned educational institutions. The United Kingdom is the primary host for this scholarship scheme, while strategic partnerships have also been established with France, Germany, Malaysia, and China.

Mrs. Kehinde-Agboola emphasized the significance of the program, stating that it will offer selected candidates the opportunity to develop expertise and excel in the industry. She highlighted that the PTDF’s mandate is to foster the growth of the oil and gas sector, and this scholarship program plays a vital role in achieving that objective.
The selection process consists of a one-week nationwide interview scheme, and the number of successful applicants ultimately depends on the program’s budget for the year. The PTDF’s collaborations with educational institutions abroad ensure that candidates receive comprehensive training and exposure to the latest advancements in the field.
By shortlisting thousands of candidates for foreign scholarships, the PTDF demonstrates its commitment to nurturing talent and promoting innovation within the Nigerian oil and gas sector. The agency’s efforts align with the broader goal of transforming the industry and empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully to its growth.
