In anticipation of the forthcoming Monday, point-of-sale (PoS) operators in Nigeria stand firm in their decision to implement a new service charge framework. Recognizing the prevailing economic conditions, the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria emphasizes the need for PoS operators to adjust their prices accordingly. Plans are underway to extend the implementation of the new pricing structure to the Federal Capital Territory and other states. Despite facing criticism and potential sanctions, the association remains determined to proceed with their plans, prepared to navigate the challenges ahead.
According to Stephen Adeoye, the PRO of AMMBAN Lagos Chapter, the association has developed a revised price list for PoS agents operating in the state. The price adjustments are justified as necessary adaptations to reflect the current economic realities in Nigeria. While these adjustments have drawn criticism from various segments of the population, including the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Central Bank, Elegbede Segun, the National Publicity Secretary of AMMBAN, assures that the threats of sanctions have thus far remained limited to newspaper headlines.
Addressing concerns about potential consequences, Elegbede asserts that the association is well-prepared to move forward with their plans, undeterred by the negative reactions. As the implementation date draws closer, PoS operators remain committed to introducing the new service charge framework on Monday.

The decision to adjust prices reflects the association’s acknowledgment of the prevailing economic challenges faced by Nigerians. Adapting to the fluctuations in the economy is imperative for businesses to ensure their long-term sustainability. While criticisms of the price increase persist, it is important to consider the broader context and the necessity for PoS operators to maintain their viability while providing crucial digital financial transaction services.
By aligning their pricing structure with the current economic realities, PoS operators aim to continue facilitating secure and convenient digital transactions. Despite initial concerns expressed by the public, the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria remains steadfast in meeting the needs of their customers while safeguarding the financial viability of their operations. As the new service charge framework is implemented on Monday, PoS operators will closely monitor its impact on their businesses and the Nigerian economy.
