The 5th MYCM, which aligns with the AU’s theme for 2023, “Acceleration of African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation,” aims to foster deeper collaboration among the AU member states, the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and the Regional Mechanisms (RMs). This meeting serves as a platform for heads of state, government officials, and high-level dignitaries to discuss and evaluate progress made in advancing the AfCFTA agenda.
President Tinubu’s participation in the event demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to promoting economic growth, peace, security, and stability in the region. As the Chairperson of ECOWAS, he will present a comprehensive report on the status of regional integration within ECOWAS. This report will highlight the efforts made by ECOWAS institutions, member states, the private sector, and other stakeholders to deepen integration through various means, including trade, free movement of persons, investment promotion, infrastructure development, and regional cooperation.

The meeting will bring together the Bureau of the AU Assembly, comprising heads of state and government from Comoros, Botswana, Burundi, and Senegal, along with leaders from the eight RECs. These regional economic communities, including ECOWAS, the East African Community (EAC), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), COMESA, SADC, CEN SAD, UMA, and ECCAS, play a vital role in advancing regional integration and fostering economic development across Africa.
In addition to the AU member states and RECs, the African Union Commission and the RMs will also participate in the meeting, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive dialogue on the implementation of the AfCFTA.
President Tinubu’s attendance at the 5th MYCM reflects Nigeria’s strong commitment to fostering intra-African trade, boosting economic growth, and improving the standard of living for its citizens. By actively engaging with fellow African leaders and key stakeholders, Nigeria aims to contribute significantly to the success of the AfCFTA and advance the collective aspirations of the African continent.
