In a bid to enhance employment opportunities and promote local innovation, President Bola Tinubu is spearheading efforts to commercialise Nigerian research results on natural medicine. The move, which aims to boost multiple sectors, was unveiled during the 2024 African Traditional Medicine Day celebration.
The Federal Government, through the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has initiated the process to commercialise five natural medicine products, with an additional 15 products awaiting approval. These initiatives are expected to generate 3.8 million jobs across industries like agriculture and education.
Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, highlighted President Tinubu’s directive to prioritise the commercialisation of Nigeria’s natural medicine research, stating that NNMDA holds the highest number of NAFDAC-listed herbal medicines in the country.
Nnaji also emphasized the creation of national medicinal farms to supply materials for clinical trials and collaborations with private sectors for sustainable production. Furthermore, the agency is working towards integrating natural medicine into Nigeria’s healthcare system, combining traditional knowledge with modern science for safety and efficacy.
With about 80% of Africa’s population relying on traditional medicine, the commercialization of these products is set to have a transformative impact on Nigeria’s healthcare and economy.
