Vladimir Putin has clinched yet another six-year term as the President of Russia, according to exit polls released on Sunday. The victory, which was widely anticipated, paves the way for Putin to become the longest-serving Russian leader in over two centuries. At 71 years old, Putin’s dominance in the political arena remains unchallenged, with his major opponents either deceased, imprisoned, or exiled.
The election, spanning three days, unfolded against a backdrop of heightened tensions due to the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine. The Ukrainian government, along with its allies, condemned the election as illegitimate, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denouncing Putin as a “dictator” intoxicated by power.

Critics and opposition figures dismissed the election, labeling it a farce. Allies of the late Alexei Navalny, Putin’s prominent rival who recently died in custody, called for a protest dubbed “Noon Against Putin,” urging voters to spoil their ballots. Navalny’s wife, Yulia Navalnaya, symbolically wrote her husband’s name on her ballot in Berlin, where she resides in exile.
Despite opposition efforts, Putin’s victory was resoundingly endorsed by state-run media, which highlighted what they described as “colossal support for the president” and the country’s “unbelievable consolidation” behind its leader.
Navalny, who had previously led mass protests and attempted to challenge Putin in the 2018 election, continued to garner tributes at his gravesite in Moscow, where spoiled ballots bearing his name were laid among flowers. However, dissent in Russia has been met with harsh repression, particularly following the military intervention in Ukraine, leading to numerous arrests of individuals engaged in protest actions during the election period.

The election occurred amidst a backdrop of continued hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with reports of Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory and fatal border attacks. Despite these challenges, Putin remains steadfast in his grip on power, poised to extend his rule until at least 2030, if not longer.
In his pre-election address, Putin acknowledged the “difficult period” facing Russia and called for unity and self-confidence among the populace. As the nation grapples with internal and external pressures, a concert is planned on Red Square to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, an event expected to serve as both a historical milestone and a celebration of Putin’s continued leadership.
