Resident Doctors Call Off Nationwide Strike, Set to Resume Work Following Government Promises

Resident Doctors Call Off Nationwide Strike, Set to Resume Work Following Government Promises

In a significant development, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has decided to suspend the nationwide strike that had been ongoing since July 26. The strike was initiated to address a series of demands that the federal government had yet to fulfill. Emeka Orji, the President of NARD, confirmed the suspension, noting that resident doctors would be returning to work at 8 am on Saturday.

The association’s decision to halt the strike comes after a series of negotiations and discussions with government officials. The NARD had put forth several demands, including the payment of the 2023 medical residency training fund (MRTF), the release of a circular on one-for-one replacement, and an upward adjustment of the consolidated medical salary structure (CONMESS).

One of the key points of contention had been the government’s announcement of an accoutrement allowance of N25,000 per quarter for medical and dental doctors in various healthcare facilities. Additionally, the government had approved a 25 percent increase in the CONMESS. However, NARD deemed these measures insufficient and termed them “paltry.”

In response to the doctors’ concerns, the government engaged in talks to avert further disruptions in the healthcare system. As a result, the resident doctors decided to halt their ongoing strike. It’s worth noting that the association plans to review the progress made in two weeks’ time.

During the strike, concerns were raised about the impact on patient care and the healthcare system at large. The suspension of the strike is likely to bring relief to many patients who were affected by the reduced medical services.

This development signifies the importance of effective communication and collaboration between the government and healthcare professionals. As the resident doctors prepare to return to work, attention will be focused on the government’s ability to fulfill its promises and address the concerns that led to the strike in the first place.

The healthcare sector plays a crucial role in any nation’s development, and ensuring that medical professionals’ demands are met is essential for the well-being of both the citizens and the healthcare system itself.
