In a groundbreaking development that could reshape the dynamics of international football, Saudi Arabia has shown keen interest in exploring the possibility of its clubs joining Europe’s premier football competition, the UEFA Champions League. The move comes as part of Saudi Arabia’s strategic efforts to elevate its domestic league’s status and propel the country onto the world football stage.
Carlo Nohra, the Chief Operating Officer of the Saudi Pro League, expressed the nation’s ambitious intentions: “We are striving for innovation, and any avenues that lead to enhancing the league’s format or quality are being earnestly considered.” While reaffirming the Saudi Pro League’s unwavering commitment to the AFC Champions League, the leading club competition in Asia, Nohra hinted at the potential discussions between the UEFA and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation regarding the prospect of Saudi teams joining the ranks of Europe’s football elite.
The European football governing body, UEFA, which counts non-European nations among its members, has indirectly addressed the speculations. Referring to remarks made by Zvonimir Boban, Chief of Football at UEFA, in August, the reports of a Saudi club’s integration into the Champions League in 2025 were deemed baseless.
Nevertheless, Saudi football’s aspirations are vividly displayed through substantial investments, totaling approximately $650 million in recent months. These investments have facilitated the acquisition of globally acclaimed players, including Karim Benzema, Neymar, and Jordan Henderson. While Saudi Arabia aimed to secure the talents of Lionel Messi, the Argentine superstar chose to join Inter Miami in the United States.

The journey to transform the Saudi Pro League into a global powerhouse has also led to rumors of Saudi club Al-Ittihad’s interest in acquiring Egyptian sensation Mohamed Salah. Although Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp brushed aside these claims, Nohra asserted, “We are sparing no effort to attract these players to Saudi Arabia. We are committed to offering competitive terms to make our league more enticing.”
While the Saudi Pro League is currently a relatively modest player in the world football arena in terms of revenue, the acquisition of marquee players underlines Saudi Arabia’s ambitious diversification strategy. This strategy involves extensive investments not only in sports but also in areas such as new urban developments and electric vehicles.
Over the past year, the Saudi Pro League has undertaken significant efforts to secure sponsorships and forge international broadcasting agreements. With broadcasts now reaching around 140 countries, Nohra disclosed that broadcast revenue has surged by an impressive 650%, a trend catalyzed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to the league from Manchester United in late 2022.
While the league’s growth is viewed as a long-term endeavor, there is no predefined timeline for achieving financial equilibrium. Nohra emphasized that the core objective revolves around augmenting the league’s and clubs’ enterprise value, ultimately establishing an investable asset.

Simon Chadwick, a distinguished expert in sports and geopolitical economy, offered a perspective on Saudi Arabia’s aspirations, citing the nation’s need to act swiftly and strategically amidst oil price fluctuations. “Saudi Arabia is racing against time,” Chadwick stated, emphasizing the nation’s urgency to effectuate strategic transformations.
The convergence of Saudi Arabia’s strategic investments, the acquisition of world-renowned players, and the potential expansion into the UEFA Champions League signifies the nation’s unequivocal commitment to advancing its football ecosystem. As discussions unfold and ambitions take shape, the global football landscape could experience a groundbreaking transformation led by Saudi Arabia’s unwavering determination.
