Saudi Arabia moon sighting astronomy announced eid al fitr date

The International Astronomy Centre in Saudi Arabia has announced that Eid Al Fitr is expected to fall on Saturday, April 22. This comes after the Saudi Supreme Court urged citizens to report sightings of the crescent from Thursday. The Centre stated that it is a scientific institution that provides astronomical information and not an entity that releases official announcements. Multiple moon-sighting criteria are adopted to determine the beginning of the month.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has declared that public holidays for Eid Al Fitr will commence on Friday, April 21, which is already a weekend. The private and non-profit sectors will enjoy four days of holiday in addition to the weekend, with work resuming on Thursday, April 29. Schools will reopen on April 30.

Traditionally, Muslims visit mosques to perform early morning Eid prayers. Those who wish to stay on can perform the Friday prayer, according to the ministry. In the UAE, a public holiday has been scheduled for Thursday, April 20. The UAE’s moon-sighting committee will announce the exact start date for Eid. If Ramadan lasts 30 days, employees will return to work on Tuesday, April 25. However, if Ramadan lasts only 29 days, the Eid holiday will be four days long, and workplaces will reopen on Monday.
