The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set for a new era as Senator Abdullahi Adamu steps down from his position as National Chairman, leading to anticipation and speculation within the party

Senator Abdullahi Adamu Resigns as APC National Chairman: Party Faces Leadership Change

Senator Abdullahi Adamu has reportedly tendered his resignation as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The news has sent shockwaves through the party, prompting discussions about the future of APC leadership.

As of press time, there has been no official confirmation from Senator Adamu or the APC. Party officials have neither confirmed nor denied the reports, adding to the air of uncertainty surrounding the situation. However, party sources indicate that a press conference is scheduled for Monday noon, during which the resignation is expected to be officially announced and an acting National Chairman named.

The reported resignation of Senator Adamu is believed to be closely tied to the departure of the party’s National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore. While details of their resignation motivations remain undisclosed, party insiders suggest that a vote of no confidence would have been passed against Senator Adamu if he had not chosen to step down voluntarily.

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, a seasoned politician with a notable political career, emerged as the APC National Chairman in March 2022. He assumed the role after the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC). Adamu, who previously served as the Governor of Nasarawa State from 1999 to 2007, represented Nasarawa West Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 2011 to 2022.

The resignation of Senator Adamu comes after a period of internal strife within the APC, particularly regarding the party’s presidential primary held in June 2022. Adamu had endorsed then Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as the party’s consensus candidate, but this decision was met with strong opposition from a group of influential northern governors who favored former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu. Ultimately, Tinubu secured the party’s nomination and went on to win the presidential election held on February 25, 2023.

Since Tinubu’s victory, the APC has experienced ongoing internal disagreements between factions supporting him and other powerbrokers within the party. These disputes were initially regarded as typical political maneuvering, but they have intensified in recent weeks.

Notably, Senator Adamu openly rejected the list of principal officers for the 10th National Assembly (NASS), announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, asserting that they were not from the party’s secretariat. Furthermore, Senator Omisore, in a recent television interview, referred to Salihu Lukman, the APC Vice-Chairman in the North-West, as a “black sheep.” In response, Lukman accused Adamu and Omisore of seeking to become emperors of the party, highlighting the deepening divisions within APC ranks.

As the APC’s National Working Committee convenes for a crucial meeting, the party finds itself at a crossroads. The resignation of Senator Adamu raises questions about the future direction of the APC and the appointment of an interim National Chairman. The decision will likely have far-reaching consequences, not only for the party but also for Nigeria’s political landscape.

The impending leadership change within the APC has captured the attention of political observers, prompting searches on Google and discussions on social media platforms. The nation eagerly awaits the official confirmation of Senator Adamu’s resignation and the subsequent steps that the All Progressives Congress will take to ensure its stability and cohesion moving forward.
