The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), in collaboration with the Federal Government, has commenced a major financial intervention aimed at supporting students across the country. As of April 19, 2025, a total of ₦5 billion has been disbursed to 6,000 beneficiaries across the North-Western zone.

This initiative is part of a broader nationwide scheme designed to reach 25,000 students in all geopolitical zones of Nigeria. According to officials, this strategic empowerment program is geared toward encouraging youth participation in enterprise development, with the long-term goal of reducing unemployment and fostering rural industrial growth.

The recent North-West phase follows earlier disbursements in the South-South region, where 5,000 students benefited from similar funding. The ongoing rollout highlights a deepened commitment from the government to bridge socio-economic gaps among Nigerian youth through targeted financial support.

SMEDAN’s Director-General emphasized that the grant is not just financial aid but a strategic investment in Nigeria’s human capital. By equipping students with financial backing, the program hopes to inspire grassroots entrepreneurship and create job multipliers in local communities.

This grant program is being executed in partnership with the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and a selected microfinance institution, ensuring transparency and wide reach. The grant recipients are expected to channel the funds into entrepreneurial ventures, educational needs, and community development projects.

This disbursement also aligns with SMEDAN’s larger agenda to promote sustainable development through micro and small enterprises. By engaging young Nigerians, especially students, the program sets the stage for long-term economic resilience in underdeveloped regions.

Stakeholders believe that this move can significantly contribute to the government’s efforts in tackling poverty, reducing youth restiveness, and boosting economic inclusion.

For students and youth interested in future disbursements, staying connected with SMEDAN’s official channels and announcements is advised. More regions are expected to benefit in the coming months as the program continues its nationwide rollout.
