Comrade Oluleye Olayemi, chairman of the independent marketers branch, made this earnest plea on a recent Friday when he was re-elected for a second term. He emphasized the urgency of this action, asserting that it could significantly reduce the burden placed on citizens due to the removal of fuel subsidies.

Olayemi’s statement came in the wake of comments by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who had expressed doubt that the nation’s refineries might never be fully operational again. The chairman, however, found Obasanjo’s assertion “appalling” and expressed a more optimistic perspective. He conceded that there may have been instances of corruption within the system or the rehabilitation process, but he firmly believed that with political will and sincerity, the government could bring about the much-needed turnaround.

“The branch is in support of the position of the Nigerian Labour and NUPENG National Executive Council on the deregulation policy of the oil and gas industry,” Olayemi affirmed. He further emphasized that while the removal of subsidies might be the right decision, it would have been more prudent to defer it until the refineries were operational, thus ensuring a smoother transition for the citizens.

As Nigeria grapples with the challenges of modernizing its energy infrastructure, the call from independent marketers for expedited refinery rehabilitation underscores the critical importance of these facilities in maintaining a stable and self-reliant energy sector. It is hoped that President Tinubu and the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited will heed this call and prioritize the swift revival of the refineries for the benefit of all Nigerians.
