On October 1, 2024, President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima presided over Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations held at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. The event, themed ‘Reflecting on the Past, Inspiring the Future,’ featured a colorful military parade, cultural displays, and a symbolic release of white pigeons.
President Tinubu, arriving with the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was welcomed with a national salute before inspecting the Guard of Honour, led by Lieutenant Colonel Moshood Yusuf. The highlight of the event included a presidential change of guards and special silent drills by the Brigade of Guards.

A key moment during the celebration was a collaborative cultural display from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, symbolizing national unity. The presentation included the raising of a life-size talking drum, dubbed the “national treasure,” showcasing the strength in Nigeria’s diversity.
Dignitaries present included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, service chiefs, and diplomats. Reflecting on the parade and President Tinubu’s speech, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele emphasized that Nigeria’s progress requires a collective effort from all regions.
This year’s ceremony, scaled back due to economic challenges, marked the second Independence Day observance under Tinubu’s administration since he took office in 2023. The celebrations, which were traditionally held at Eagle Square, were moved to the Villa for a more modest event, following an announcement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
In his remarks, President Tinubu acknowledged the difficulties faced by Nigerians but reassured citizens of the government’s commitment to socioeconomic improvements, expressing optimism about the future.
