A tragic incident unfolded at the Federal University of Gashua (FUGA) in Yobe State, resulting in the loss of a promising young life. Shamsiya Murtala, a 300-level student of the Geography Department, met her untimely demise as fire engulfed a female hostel on Saturday.
Reports indicate that the fire erupted in the victim’s room while she was asleep, necessitating the intervention of fellow students to rescue her. Despite their efforts, Shamsiya succumbed to the blaze and was pronounced dead at the Specialist Hospital in Gashua.
The inferno, which ravaged parts of the hostel, also inflicted damage on students’ belongings and valuables. Fortunately, the university’s firefighters along with the State Fire Service managed to contain the fire, averting further catastrophe.

As investigations into the cause of the fire commence, condolences pour in from various quarters. Senator Ahmad Lawan, President of the 9th Senate, mourned the loss of Shamsiya Murtala and called for a thorough inquiry into the incident. In a statement, he expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and urged the university to implement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Shamsiya’s passing is not only a profound loss to her family and the university community but also serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in educational institutions.
