In light of recent reports indicating the presence of the Sudan strain of Ebola in Uganda, Nigerian authorities are urging citizens and residents to minimize travel to regions affected by the virus unless absolutely necessary. This caution comes as part of a broader effort to safeguard public health amid growing concerns over the potential spread of the disease.
The Nigerian government has rolled out a detailed contingency plan designed to quickly respond to any signs of an outbreak. A core component of this strategy is the intensification of surveillance measures, particularly at entry points such as international airports and border crossings. This enhanced monitoring is supported by an emergency response team that stands ready to increase diagnostic testing and implement further control measures if needed.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed that, to date, no Ebola cases have been reported within the country. Despite this, proactive measures are being taken in close collaboration with various ministries, departments, and partner organizations. The National Emerging Viral Hemorrhagic Diseases (EVHD) Technical Working Group has been actively involved in monitoring global and regional developments related to Ebola and other hemorrhagic fevers.
Dr. Jide Idris, Director General of the NCDC, highlighted that the nation’s health infrastructure is on high alert. “We have updated our emergency contingency plan and increased our surveillance efforts at key points of entry,” he noted. “Our laboratories, especially those located in cities with international airports and the National Reference Laboratory, have been equipped to boost testing capacity immediately if the situation demands it.” In addition, Dr. Idris confirmed that all Lassa Fever testing facilities are ready to expand their operations to support Ebola testing if required.
While the World Health Organization (WHO) has advised against imposing travel or trade restrictions on Uganda, Nigerian health authorities remain cautious. The NCDC strongly recommends that Nigerians avoid traveling to any countries with confirmed Ebola cases unless travel is absolutely essential. This precautionary advice aims to reduce the risk of introducing the virus into Nigeria.
For those already in Nigeria who have recently traveled to or transited through affected areas within the last 21 days, the NCDC has issued clear instructions. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, sore throat, diarrhea, weakness, vomiting, abdominal pain, or unexplained bleeding are urged to immediately contact the health hotline at 6232 or reach out to their state’s Ministry of Health. They are also advised to remain in place to prevent potential transmission via public or private transport until medical professionals can assess their condition.
Dr. Idris reassured the public that the NCDC is diligently monitoring not only Ebola but also other health threats, including Lassa fever, meningitis, diphtheria, mpox, measles, and anthrax. Regular updates will be provided as the situation evolves, ensuring that Nigerians are well-informed and prepared.
This heightened state of alert follows Uganda’s confirmation of an Ebola outbreak on January 30, 2025, with the virus affecting regions such as Wakiso, Mukono, and Mbale. Thus far, there has been one confirmed case and a postmortem-confirmed death, along with 44 documented transmissions. Nigerian authorities continue to monitor these developments closely while urging the public to adhere strictly to health advisories.
Nigerians are encouraged to remain vigilant and to avoid unnecessary travel to Uganda and its affected regions, as the government intensifies efforts to prevent the introduction and spread of Ebola in the country.
