Despite dismissing several arguments from Trump’s legal team as “unsubstantiated grievances,” Justice Merchan explained that delaying sentencing hearings is not uncommon. He emphasized that Trump would not be treated differently due to his status, stating, “Given the unique facts and circumstances of this case, there is no reason why this Defendant should be treated differently than any other.”
In his ruling, Justice Merchan also stressed that his decision to delay should “dispel any suggestion” of political bias. He assured the public that the court’s actions were not influenced by any political considerations.
A spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office confirmed that his team is prepared for sentencing when the new date is determined.
This delay comes as Trump faces legal scrutiny for allegedly disguising payments as legal expenses, violating election laws. The outcome of the case remains highly anticipated as it unfolds amidst the backdrop of Trump’s potential 2024 presidential bid.
