Real Sociedad striker Umar Sadiq has taken to Instagram to provide clarity on his departure from the Super Eagles squad just days before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kick-off. Sadiq’s withdrawal was initially suspected to be due to a knee injury sustained during a friendly against Guinea, leading to his replacement by Terem Moffi.
In a detailed post on Instagram, Sadiq expressed his unwavering commitment to representing Nigeria and shed light on the circumstances that prompted his withdrawal. According to the 26-year-old striker, during the friendly match against Guinea, he experienced a significant impact from two Guinean defenders, resulting in a penalty for Nigeria. Despite the Super Eagles’ medical team recommending substitution for preventive measures, Sadiq insisted on playing the entire game.
The following day, Sadiq noticed swelling in his knee, prompting a thorough examination by the Super Eagles’ medical team. The examination revealed a meniscus injury, leading to concerns about his fitness for AFCON. Consequently, the team manager decided to replace him with Terem Moffi, considering the uncertainties surrounding Sadiq’s readiness for the tournament.
However, upon returning to his club, Real Sociedad, and undergoing further examinations, Sadiq received a different diagnosis from the club’s medical team. Contrary to the initial assessment, Real Sociedad’s medical staff determined that Sadiq had suffered only a bruise, clearing him to resume training.
