In response to the escalating mpox crisis, UNICEF, in collaboration with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Gavi, and the World Health Organization (WHO), has issued an emergency tender to secure immediate access to available mpox vaccines. This initiative is also aimed at expanding the production capacity of manufacturers to meet the growing demand. Depending on the needs and available funding, agreements could be established for up to 12 million doses through 2025.
Vaccination is a critical tool in interrupting the transmission of mpox and protecting vulnerable populations, particularly children. In addition to vaccines, global health agencies are prioritizing infection prevention and control measures, as well as risk communication and community engagement, to curb the spread of the disease.
As part of these efforts, UNICEF is deploying a wide range of medical supplies, including personal protective equipment (PPE), diagnostic tests, medical treatment kits, hygiene supplies, and tents to countries that are at the forefront of the crisis. These supplies are essential for supporting medical countermeasures such as treatment, case isolation, and surveillance.
UNICEF, known as the world’s largest single vaccine buyer, procures more than 2 billion doses of vaccines annually. This massive procurement effort is crucial for both routine child immunization and outbreak response across nearly 100 countries.
This coordinated effort by UNICEF, Africa CDC, Gavi, WHO, and other partners underscores the global commitment to combating the mpox outbreak and ensuring that affected countries have the necessary resources to protect their populations.
