WAEC Announces Dates for 2023 School-Based WASSCE Examination

WAEC Announced date for the 2023 examination

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the dates for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school-based candidates. The examination is set to take place from Monday, May 8 to Friday, June 23. The announcement was made by the Head of National Office, Patrick Areghan, during a pre-examination press briefing held on Thursday, May 4, 2023, in Lagos State.

Areghan also revealed that a total of 1,621,853 candidates from 20,851 government and private schools have registered for the examination. This figure represents a significant increase from the 2022 WASSCE registration numbers, which recorded 1,538,445 candidates from 19,129 schools.

The WASSCE is a highly competitive examination that assesses the academic performance of secondary school students across West African countries. It is widely recognized as a benchmark for students seeking admission into tertiary institutions both locally and internationally.

The examination is divided into two categories: the school-based examination and the private examination. The school-based examination is conducted within a specified period for candidates who are currently enrolled in secondary schools, while the private examination is for candidates who are not currently enrolled in any school.

According to Areghan, the school-based examination is open to candidates in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. He also disclosed that the examination will be conducted in line with the COVID-19 safety protocols as prescribed by the health authorities.

In preparation for the examination, the WAEC has urged all registered candidates to take their studies seriously and abide by all the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of the examination. Parents, guardians, and school authorities have also been advised to ensure that their wards and students are well prepared for the examination and refrain from any form of examination malpractice.

The WAEC has assured the public that it will continue to ensure a seamless and transparent examination process and urged all stakeholders to support its efforts towards achieving this goal.

As the WASSCE draws closer, candidates are expected to intensify their preparations in order to perform optimally in the examination and achieve their academic goals. It is also hoped that the outcome of the examination will serve as a yardstick for measuring the standard of education in the West African sub-region.
