In a bold move to address the ongoing strike by primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has threatened to allocate ten percent of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from the Area Councils to ensure the striking teachers receive their salaries. This announcement came after Wike inspected the ongoing Apo-Karshi Road project on Thursday.
The teachers, who resumed their strike on September 18, 2024, are demanding several concessions, including the implementation of a 40% Peculiar Allowance and the payment of 25 months of Minimum Wage Arrears. Wike’s commitment to resolving the issue highlights the government’s urgency to prevent disruptions in education.
Wike emphasized the importance of keeping children in school and stated, “No serious government would permit this strike to continue, affecting the education of our children.” He expressed his frustration over the teachers’ situation and indicated that he would not sit idle while the strike persists.
To facilitate dialogue, Wike has invited the Area Council Chairmen and representatives from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to a meeting aimed at finding a resolution. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that teachers are compensated for their work.
Regarding the Apo-Karshi Road project, which is crucial for alleviating traffic and boosting local economic activities, Wike stated that the contractor has assured completion by April 2025. While he remains cautious about these claims, he is willing to give the contractor the benefit of the doubt, recognizing the project’s significance to the community.
The ongoing discussions and potential use of IGR funds signal a proactive approach by the Wike administration to tackle pressing issues affecting education in the FCT, aiming to restore normalcy for students and teachers alike.
