In a startling political shift, 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have parted ways with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to align themselves with the All Progressives Congress (APC). Led by Martin Amaewhule, the lawmakers announced their decision during a meeting at the Assembly Complex on Monday, December 11, 2023.
The defection unfolds against the backdrop of a prolonged Speakership tussle between Amaewhule and Edison Ehie, with the former believed to be loyal to ex-governor Nyesom Wike and the latter associated with Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The Assembly, under Amaewhule’s leadership, had previously served an impeachment notice on Governor Fubara and ousted Ehie as the House leader in October. However, in a swift countermove, members loyal to Fubara impeached Amaewhule and instated Ehie as the new Speaker.

The political drama in Rivers State stems from a deeper rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Despite recent public appearances suggesting a resolution between the two leaders, the mass defection of lawmakers from the PDP to the APC introduces a new layer of uncertainty to the state’s political landscape.
In a separate development over the weekend, key figures from other parties, including the deputy governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 election, Patricia Ogbonnaya, and former Ahoada-West Chairman, Karibo Wilson, announced their defection to the PDP. They joined the PDP faction loyal to Fubara, alongside members of the Ehie-led group of lawmakers.

As Rivers State grapples with these political realignments, questions arise about the implications for governance, stability, and the resolution of the Speakership dispute. The shifting alliances and unresolved tensions among key political figures are poised to shape the political trajectory of the state in the weeks ahead.
