Arewa Forum Protests CBN Units and FAAN Headquarters Relocation to Lagos

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has raised objections over the recent decision by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to relocate key departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) from Abuja to Lagos.

In a statement released on Sunday, Prof. Tukur Mohammed-Baba, the National Publicity Secretary of ACF, expressed concerns about the move, denouncing it as a deliberate attempt to further underdevelop the northern region of the country. The ACF argues that the relocation is in bad faith and questions the sincerity behind the decision.

The CBN, citing congestion at its Abuja headquarters, announced plans to transfer some departments to Lagos through an internal memo. Similarly, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, officially declared the relocation of FAAN’s headquarters to Lagos.

The ACF emphasized that the planned relocations are unnecessary and urged the Federal Government and the National Assembly to intervene. The organization called on the agencies involved to reconsider their decisions, proposing alternative means to address alleged office overcrowding and highlighting available land in the Federal Capital Territory for expansion.

Expressing concerns about recent appointments in the Ministry of Aviation, the ACF spokesperson noted a significant regional disparity in representation, adding fuel to the ongoing tensions. The organization called for fair and balanced appointments, emphasizing the need for inclusivity.

In response to the ACF’s objections, a CBN official, speaking anonymously, clarified that the decision to relocate departments to Lagos is purely operational and not politically motivated. The official refuted claims that it is a ploy to underdevelop the North, emphasizing that the move is aimed at optimizing the operational environment of the bank.

As discussions surrounding the relocations unfold, it remains to be seen whether the Federal Government and the National Assembly will address the ACF’s concerns and whether alternative solutions will be considered.
