In a bid to alleviate the burden of increased transportation costs caused by the recent removal of petrol subsidy, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has initiated a groundbreaking initiative. The governor launched a fleet of 80 buses, tricycles, and pick-up vans to offer free transportation services for residents in Maiduguri Metropolis and Jere Local Council. This timely and significant move aims to support the local community and address the challenges arising from the subsidy removal.
The subsidy removal, implemented by President Bola Tinubu, has resulted in a surge in transportation expenses, adversely affecting the livelihoods of many in Borno State. Recognizing the urgency to assist residents during this difficult period, Governor Zulum’s administration has taken swift action. The fleet, which includes 50 luxurious buses from the Borno Express Corporation, the state’s transport company, will cater to the transportation needs of the community.
In addition to the buses, the state government has also hired 30 pick-up vans exclusively for the safe and convenient commuting of farmers to their farmlands. These farmers, often facing substantial challenges in accessing their agricultural fields, will benefit immensely from this initiative. The pick-up vans will provide transportation within a radius of 10 kilometers from Maiduguri, enabling farmers to reach their farmlands more efficiently.

Governor Zulum emphasized the significance of this program in his address during the flag-off ceremony held in Molai Community. He acknowledged the economic strain caused by the subsidy removal and highlighted the administration’s commitment to reducing the high cost of living in the state. The provision of 80 buses and 30 pick-up vans is a proactive measure to facilitate the transportation needs of farmers during the cropping season.
The governor also called for the cooperation of the farmers with the troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), who will be accompanying them to their respective farming communities. To ensure the safety and security of the farmers, the police and other security agencies have been deployed along the transportation routes. This concerted effort aims to protect the farmers and provide them with a conducive environment to carry out their agricultural activities without fear.
Governor Zulum expressed his gratitude to the military for their continuous sacrifices in safeguarding the people of Borno State, particularly as they access their farmlands. The governor’s initiative is a testament to the commitment of the state government to support its residents in overcoming the challenges posed by the subsidy removal.
Governor Zulum’s launch of a fleet of vehicles to provide free transportation for Borno residents in the wake of subsidy removal has received widespread appreciation. This initiative, aimed at reducing the high cost of living and supporting farmers, will have a significant positive impact on the community. By acknowledging the challenges faced by the residents and taking proactive measures to address them, the Borno State government has once again demonstrated its commitment to the welfare and well-being of its people.
