How President Bola Tinubu Was Misled in Nominating Maryam Shetty as Minister, Reveals Ganduje

In a recent revelation that sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, disclosed how President Bola Tinubu was allegedly “misled” into nominating Maryam Shetty as a ministerial candidate from Kano. The revelation sheds light on the intricacies of the political decision-making process and the role of social media in shaping public opinion.

When news broke about Maryam Shetty’s nomination as a ministerial candidate, it generated a wave of excitement and anticipation among her supporters. However, the joyous atmosphere quickly turned tumultuous as social media became flooded with criticism and scrutiny of Ms. Shetty’s online presence. Concerns were raised about her suitability for the ministerial position, and questions were raised about her ability to represent the people of Kano effectively.

Abdullahi Ganduje, the former governor of Kano State and a prominent figure in the APC, revealed that President Bola Tinubu did not consult him before nominating Maryam Shetty for the ministerial position. This lack of prior consultation raised eyebrows among party members and other stakeholders in Kano, who expected to be part of the decision-making process for such a significant appointment.

Ganduje further stated that the president’s attention was drawn to the controversy surrounding Maryam Shetty’s social media posts after the public outcry gained momentum. Social media, with its ever-watchful eye, had recorded and amplified Ms. Shetty’s previous posts, bringing them under scrutiny and causing discomfort within the APC ranks.

President Bola Tinubu, concerned by the growing public backlash and criticism, sought clarification from Ganduje about Ms. Shetty’s nomination. The revelation of President Tinubu’s inquiry exposed the lack of due diligence in the initial selection process, leaving the party leadership in an uncomfortable position.

In response to the mounting pressure and as a corrective measure, President Bola Tinubu decided to withdraw Maryam Shetty’s nomination as a ministerial candidate. He then tasked Ganduje with finding a suitable replacement, emphasizing the importance of appointing a female nominee from Kano to address concerns about gender representation in the cabinet.

Ganduje, in his quest to find a replacement candidate, eventually settled on Dr. Mariya Mahmud Bunkure, a medical doctor and former Commissioner for Higher Education in Kano during his tenure as governor. Dr. Mahmud, hailing from Kano South, is now undergoing the screening process for the ministerial position in the Senate.

The incident involving Maryam Shetty’s nomination serves as a cautionary tale about the significance of thorough evaluations and consultations in making critical political appointments. It highlights the role of social media in shaping public perception and influencing political decisions, even at the highest levels of government.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, this revelation underscores the need for transparency, inclusivity, and careful consideration when nominating candidates for crucial positions. It also serves as a reminder that public opinion, amplified through social media, can have a profound impact on political decisions, compelling leaders to reevaluate their choices in the best interest of the nation and the party.
