National Population Commission Set to Conduct 2023 Census and Housing Enumeration Exercise in Nigeria
The Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC) for Delta State, Chief Richard Odibo, has announced that the long-awaited 2023 Census and Housing Enumeration exercise in Nigeria will soon be conducted. Odibo emphasized the need for the Commission to engage the presidency to ensure the exercise proceeds without unnecessary delay.
In a breakfast meeting with media executives held in Asaba, Chief Richard Odibo expressed confidence that the census would take place soon, citing the importance of providing accurate and real-time data to President Bola Tinubu as he assumes leadership of the nation. Former President Muhammadu Buhari had previously postponed the census and housing enumeration, granting the incumbent President an opportunity to contribute to the process.
Odibo highlighted the Commission’s commitment to capturing precise information and avoiding reliance on projections. This dedication stems from the desire to equip the President with comprehensive data for effective governance. He stressed that the NPC had made significant progress in preparations, investing substantial human and material resources in implementation activities.
Preparatory measures for the exercise have been meticulously arranged, ensuring that the necessary resources are readily available. The Commission has already recruited approximately one million workers for the assignment. Furthermore, they have acquired Personal Digital Assistant devices, with over 500,000 units delivered and configured across the various states, showcasing the meticulous planning undertaken by the NPC.
To safeguard the resources already invested, the Commission has made comprehensive arrangements for the secure storage of equipment to prevent damage or theft. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the nation will not be forced to restart the process when the current administration approves a date for the exercise.
The upcoming census and housing enumeration exercise hold immense significance for Nigeria’s governance and development. The generation of accurate data will facilitate evidence-based decision-making, enabling President Bola Tinubu to address the nation’s challenges and capitalize on its opportunities effectively. It will aid in the formulation and implementation of policies and programs that align with the needs of the Nigerian population.
The NPC’s commitment to conducting a successful census and housing enumeration exercise is evident in their proactive measures and meticulous planning. Their preparedness signifies a concerted effort to generate reliable data, which will serve as a solid foundation for Nigeria’s growth and development. By employing state-of-the-art technology and recruiting a substantial workforce, the Commission is primed to execute the exercise with efficiency and accuracy.
As the nation eagerly awaits the announcement of the official date for the census and housing enumeration exercise, Nigerians can rest assured that the NPC is fully dedicated to delivering a comprehensive and reliable dataset. The forthcoming census promises to be a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards effective governance and national progress.
