NPC Expends N200 Billion for 2023 Census Preparation
The National Population Commission (NPC) in Nigeria has revealed that it has invested a significant sum of N200 billion in the preparation for the forthcoming 2023 population and housing census. The executive chairman of the commission, Nasir Kwarra, made this announcement during a breakfast meeting held on Thursday.
According to Kwarra, the allocated funds formed part of the N800 billion budget expected from the federal government for the complete execution of the population census. This substantial amount covers the expenses incurred during the extensive five-year preparation period leading up to the census.
The high cost associated with conducting a digital census was cited as a major reason for the significant expenditure. The commission is required to procure specialized equipment and data necessary for the successful implementation of the census. To ensure accuracy and efficiency, over one million personnel have been recruited for the task of conducting a credible and widely acceptable digital census.
Kwarra emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum in preparing for the census and highlighted that the primary focus of the commission is to establish a solid foundation for future censuses. He reassured the public of the commission’s commitment to conducting a reliable and trustworthy census.

Inuwa Jalingo, the census manager, stated that the commission has dedicated substantial effort toward conducting a digital census. Additionally, the commission is fully prepared to establish a robust quality dashboard and reliable data infrastructure for the census exercise.
Earlier in April, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the postponement of the census. The original scheduled dates for the exercise were between May 3 and 5. The new date for the census is expected to be determined by the incoming administration, as announced by Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture.
The NPC’s significant investment and extensive preparations indicate the commission’s commitment to conducting an accurate and reliable census. As Nigeria’s population continues to grow, an updated and comprehensive census is crucial for effective governance, resource allocation, and informed decision-making.
