Abakaliki, Nigeria – In a recent statement, the National Population Commission (NPC) provided a crucial update on the resumption of the long-awaited 2023 National Census. The NPC revealed that while a new date for the census has yet to be fixed, the responsibility lies with the Federal Government to determine the schedule. The commission emphasized its commitment to safeguarding resources already expended during the preparatory phase to avoid unnecessary duplication of efforts when a new date is announced.
Mr. Darlington Okereke, the NPC’s Federal Commissioner in Ebonyi, made these remarks during a one-day Breakfast Meeting for Media Executives held in Abakaliki. Okereke stressed the necessity of preserving the progress made thus far to ensure a seamless transition once the census resumes.

“We have gathered here to enlighten you on the next steps forward in light of the postponement of the census by the former President,” Okereke stated. He further highlighted the extensive preparatory activities conducted by the commission, including the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD), pre-tests, trial census, recruitment, and training of field staff, procurement and configuration of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), establishment of ICT infrastructures and logistics support, as well as advocacy and publicity campaigns.

He concluded by affirming that the National Population Commission has laid a solid foundation for future censuses, ensuring accurate and up-to-date demographic data for effective governance.
The 2023 National Census, which holds immense importance for Nigeria’s planning, development, and resource allocation, has faced several delays. However, with the NPC’s commitment to safeguarding previous investments and its dedication to thorough preparations, the stage is set for a successful census once the Federal Government determines a new date.
