The National Population Commission (NPC) in Nigeria has announced that the 2023 Census will commence tentatively on Wednesday, May 3, and run until Sunday, May 7, 2023. However, the start date will only be confirmed after consultations with state governors.
During a meeting with the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja on Thursday, the Chairman of the NPC, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, stated that Nigerians will face a three-day movement restriction across the country as the National Housing and Population Census kicks off. He also mentioned that the commission would work with the Minister of Foreign Affairs to determine the best way for the Diplomatic Corps to participate in the exercise.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, emphasized the importance of the census in Nigeria’s development.

To ensure a successful census exercise, the NPC has set conditions that must be met before it commences. The commission has called for adequate funding, the provision of necessary logistics, and the deployment of security personnel to ensure a peaceful exercise.
The census is crucial for Nigeria as it helps to provide accurate data on the population, which can be used for policy planning, resource allocation, and other developmental purposes. The NPC is, therefore, urging all stakeholders to support the exercise to ensure a successful and credible census in 2023.
