
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as a deep national loss. The former leader died in London on Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness.
This was made known in a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
President Tinubu, in his reaction, has contacted the former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, and extended his condolences to the family.
To support preparations for the return of the late president’s body, Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom.
“President Tinubu has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria,” the statement read.
As part of the national mourning, President Tinubu also ordered that all flags across the country be flown at half-mast.
