On this day, April 15, 2024, we commemorate the 112th anniversary of one of the most tragic maritime disasters in history – the sinking of the RMS Titanic. In the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, the majestic Titanic, touted as the largest, most luxurious, and technologically advanced ocean liner of its time, met its untimely demise in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.

The ill-fated voyage began four days earlier, departing from Southampton, England, bound for New York City, USA, with an estimated 2,224 passengers and crew on board. Tragically, more than 1,500 lives were lost when the Titanic struck an iceberg at approximately 11:40 PM ship’s time

Despite receiving six warnings of sea ice earlier that day, the Titanic maintained its speed of roughly 22 knots (41 km/h). The iceberg was sighted, but the ship’s inability to maneuver swiftly led to a glancing blow that compromised her starboard side, allowing water to flood six of her sixteen compartments.

While the Titanic was equipped with distress flares and wireless communication, the limited capacity of the lifeboats – only twenty, including four collapsible ones – proved insufficient to evacuate all passengers and crew effectively. Designed to ferry individuals to nearby rescue vessels, the lifeboat system fell short in the face of the disaster, leaving many without a means of escape as the ship descended into the icy depths.

As we reflect on this somber anniversary, let us honor the memory of those who perished aboard the RMS Titanic and the courage of those who survived. May their stories serve as a reminder of the importance of maritime safety and preparedness.
